What you always wanted to know about...but never dared to ask! The doctor loves to take care of any uncertainties you may have about the archive and other areas of this site.
The page title «Mad Mags»
-
Mags is an English contraction for Magazines - therefore the title of our web page signifies nothing else than Mad Magazines and is by no means a wrong written allusion on the known Australian cult film Mad Max.
The subject of this website
-
This project devotes itself especially to the secondary literature to fantastic film. Mad Mags introduces not only magazines and books, but also film and festival programs and advertising materials like posters and press books. The archive has its main focus on detailed summaries and search options, so that you can search the data pool directly for certain film titles or persons.
«Dr. Rotwang», the mascot
-
The doctor is one of the most impressive characters in the German silent film classic Metropolis. Some of the illustrations used here are based on the film and the figure of Rotwang. He is impersonated by the actor Rudolf Klein-Rogge. His Rotwang is one of the first «Mad Scientists» of the film history and, so to speak, the mascot of Mad Mags.
Literature categories
-
The archive is split in six different categories in order to separate rare books or souvenir magazines from regularly published items such as magazines or film programs.
Magazines | From copied, stuck together fanzines to professional glossy magazines. |
Books | Do you really need an explanation? |
Film Programs | Film programs were, in principle, an early manifestation of today's souvenir magazines and could be acquired as accompanying «movie memorabilia» to the screen spectacle in the cinemas. There are regularly appearing film program series only in Europe. |
Souvenir Magazines | Professionally processed brochures which deal with only one film. They are published at the same time with the film. |
Festival Programs | Especially for certain events like film festivals or conventions produced magazines. |
Advertising Materials | Press books, Lobbycards and film posters as well as other publications which were produced only for advertising purposes. |
Genres
-
Fourteen different genre symbols show the main focuses of a publication. Beside the important genres like «horror movies», «literature» or «Behind the scenes» there are also genres which are to be found, primarily, in the area of the magazines, for example «music» or «media».

| Horror Monsters and demons on the big screen | |
| Fantastic TV TV series, TV movies and episode guides |

| Science Fiction A look into the future - Mars invasions, star wars and time travellers | |
| Making of A look behind the scenes - shootings and special effects |

| Fantasy Fairy tales, magic and mythology | |
| People Biographies and interviews |

| Low Budget / Independent Amateur movies, trash and (s)exploitation | |
| Literature Interesting facts about books and novels, fanzines and «fan Fiction» |

| Thriller / True Crime The whodunit, the thriller, the Giallo - from film killers to real life psychopaths | |
| Media Movies, soundtracks, radio plays on all kind of media |

| Eastern Fascinating entertainment from Far East | |
| Music Music fanzines with film columns |

| Anime From cartoons suited for families to Adults-Only-Animes | |
| Science Where the borders become blurred between science and science fiction |
Article categories
-
The specific search according to certain information is substantially simplified by the article categories. The principal subject of an article can be assigned to one of sixteen categories. A poster to a certain film can be found in this manner about the combined search for the film title and the category «Artwork». The names of the categories are selfexplicatory. Here follows a short description:
| These are the «leading stories» of a publication, usually the most extensive articles of magazines are announced largely on the covers. These articles contain several main focuses, e.g., about actors and special effects and can't be assigned to only one category.
| | The annoying and much-discussed subject of censorship - cut reports, ratings and alternative versions of movies. Especially the comic sector is very often concerned by censorship measures.
|
| Probably the most important article category of this website: movie reviews!
| | New releases on every kind of media (DVD, VHS, CD, etc.) |
| You find all information about TV productions and episode guides in this category.
| | Pictures of posters, lobby cards and other rare motives worth mentioning
|
| The secrets of the film makers - the origin of special effects, set visits and interviews | | Movies are often announced without precise information about cast or crew. The facts often come from the rumour mill and have to be read with care!
|
| The people in front of and behind the camera - actors, directors, effects makers are introduced during interviews and biographies
| | Almost every magazine has a small column for news. Only the most interesting ones are taken up here. |
| Reports of film festivals and conventions as well as fan arrangements | | Some magazines of the past deal beside the movies also with technology and science - e.g. astronautics or computer engineering of the future |
| Book reviews, Fanzine criticism, novels and novel extracts and «fan fiction» | | Very briefly: this column is for articles which can be assigned to no other category. |
Price Guide
-
The prize guide specifies fair prices in respect of the values of certain publications. It is distinguished between three different conditions which can affect the value of each item:
G | Good | no pages missing, but very worn, especially the cover. Eventually dog's ears and little repairs with adhesive tape, spine damages or inscriptions (e.g. coupons). |
VG-FN | Very Good - Fine | Smaller defects like little scratches or edges damaged by storage, no inscriptions and no pages missing |
VF-NM | Very Fine - Near Mint | Hardly recognizable defects or as good as new condition. Every collector will be glad. |
If you observe the prices with the known on-line auctioneers for old or rare publications in Europe and in the USA, you will note partly drastic differences. Because there is, in Germany for example, only a very small group of collectors who would spend a higher sum of money on a rare magazine, such publications achieve in these countries often only a fractional amount of the price which the same item would achieve in the USA. The prices declared by our prize guide are based on the average prices at on-line auctions and estimates of different collectors.
Detailed Summary vs. "Short Synopsis"
-
Not with all film writings a complete and detailed table of contents is available immediately, because the arrangement can last some time according to complexity and circumference. Of course it's tried to exchange these short contents at a later time for the more precise summaries.
Selection of the Reprints
-
We try to offer articles as reprints which fit very well in the main topics of a publication and are therefore typical for them. The layout is reproduced to a great extent from the printed or copied original. If the reprints differ strongly from the originals, these are marked as a Director's Cut.
The addition «Director´s Cut»
-
The PDF documents which are marked with the note Director's Cut are either from the authors corrected, updated texts (Updated Edition) or with qualitatively better pictures equipped articles (... in shocking colours!).
